– Jeffrey, a full-term newborn (8 lb 14 oz; 22 in; Apgar scores of 8 and 9), unremarkable prenatal and birth histories; initially presents ~3 days after delivery
Circumcised 48 hours after birth; 8 hours later, bleeding was observed at the site of incision and treated with ice, pressure, and silver nitrate
Discharged the next morning but was brought to the emergency department 24 hours later with recurrence of bleeding, which was stopped with sutures
Another widespread bleed was observed 5 days later at the incision site; a pressure dressing applied for 20 minutes failed to stop the bleeding
Referred for hematologic workup
– Medical history
No known family history of hemophilia, although an uncle died of a “bleeding disorder” at a relatively young age
– Current status
Coagulation studies revealed severe hemophilia A
Factor VIII infusion resulted in complete resolution of bleeding
