Case Scenario Part 3:
School Age
– Jeffrey, now aged 5 years, has just started kindergarten
- School staff are worried because they have never had a child with hemophilia
– Medical history
- Diagnosed with severe hemophilia A after a bleeding episode that occurred following his circumcision at 2 days of age
- Has received factor replacement therapy as needed and prophylactically throughout his childhood
- Continues on every-other-day prophylaxis for his severe hemophilia A
- No recent hospitalizations for bleeding episodes
– Current status
- Teachers and administrators are unsure if Jeffrey should be allowed to participate in all physical education or have his activities limited
– A representative from the local HTC visits the school and completes an education session with Jeffrey’s teacher and the school nurse
– Jeffrey’s mother is present and helps develop a plan for parental contact during emergencies
