Case Scenario Part 4:
Adolescence to Young Adulthood

– Jeffrey, now 18 years of age, recently graduated from high school and will begin college in the fall

 

• His hemophilia has been managed since childhood at his local HTC

– Medical history

 

• Diagnosed with severe hemophilia A after a bleeding episode that occurred following his circumcision at 2 days of age
• continues on every-other-day prophylaxis, which he administers himself, for his severe hemophilia A
• Unremarkable except for periodic bleeding episodes

– Current status

 

• Injured his left thigh playing a pickup basketball game while attending an orientation weekend at his college; unsure if he fractured his leg (requires evaluation)
• Forgot to infuse his routine dose of blood factor before the weekend
• Contacted the local HTC by telephone and is instructed to infuse immediately and then go to the local emergency department; he is also provided with the telephone number of the HTC (located 30 minutes away) for outpatient follow-up
