Case Scenario Part 4: Adolescence to Young Adulthood
– Jeffrey, now 18 years of age, recently graduated from high school and will begin college in the fall
His hemophilia has been managed since childhood at his local HTC
– Medical history
Diagnosed with severe hemophilia A after a bleeding episode that occurred following his circumcision at 2 days of age
continues on every-other-day prophylaxis, which he administers himself, for his severe hemophilia A
Unremarkable except for periodic bleeding episodes
– Current status
Injured his left thigh playing a pickup basketball game while attending an orientation weekend at his college; unsure if he fractured his leg (requires evaluation)
Forgot to infuse his routine dose of blood factor before the weekend
Contacted the local HTC by telephone and is instructed to infuse immediately and then go to the local emergency department; he is also provided with the telephone number of the HTC (located 30 minutes away) for outpatient follow-up
