EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

• Describe the effects of severe hemophilia on clinical, economic, and humanistic outcomes
• Evaluate the benefits of regular prophylaxis treatment for children with severe hemophilia
• Recommend hemophilia prophylaxis management policies and protocols to optimize patient outcomes in a managed care and/or specialty pharmacy setting
• Provide accurate and appropriate counsel as part of the treatment team
• Provide appropriate care and counsel for patients and their families

TARGET AUDIENCE

• Medical Directors and Pharmacy Directors from health plans, HMOs, integrated health systems, employers, quality organizations, and other managed care organizations (MCOs)
• Managed care-affiliated care team members involved with patient evaluation, education, and follow-up for patients with hemophilia including: physicians, pharmacists, registered nurses, and case managers

STATEMENT OF NEED/PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Hemophilia is a high cost chronic condition with total annual costs that can average $250,000 or more for many patients. Optimal outcomes require a collaborative and coordinated patient experience throughout various life scenarios. This case scenario, joint provided by the National Hemophilia Foundation, will emphasize the need for well-coordinated treatment management, the importance of understanding effective ways of using available treatments, and the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders as a patient confronts issues with his care for hemophilia.
