A Myriad of Factors Contribute to Increased Morbidity and Mortality Among Patients with Hemophilia
Factors identified to be independently associated with an increased risk of death (relative risk, P value) included the following:
AIDS (33.5, <0.001)
HIV infection without AIDS (4.7, <0.001)
Liver disease (2.4, <0.001)
Medicare/Medicaid insurance (1.4, <0.01)
Conversely, among approximately 3,000 patients followed over 3 years, the relative mortality rate increased by 70% and the relative hospitalization rate increased by 40% for patients receiving care outside of an HTC.
