William D. LaPiana, M.T. (A.S.C.P.) is currently the Regional Director of Advanced Therapies at Accredo, An Express Scripts Company. Mr. LaPiana has over 20 years of experience with clinical sales team management in the areas of specialty pharmacy, biotech pharmaceuticals, medical products and laboratory diagnostics. In addition to his industry knowledge, he is experienced in providing clinical education and training in the pathology and management of various medical conditions. Most recently, he was the National Senior Director for the hemophilia and bleeding disorders program at CuraScript (an Express Scripts specialty pharmacy) where his role included supervision of the field BD nurse educators.
Mr. LaPiana earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from the State University of New York at Buffalo, School of Health Sciences. He is a medical laboratory professional and Board Registered by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP). He started his career at the Center for Laboratory Medicine in a hematology and specialty coagulation laboratory, where he received his first hands-on exposure to bleeding and clotting disorders.
After leaving the clinical laboratory and spending several years in diagnostics and medical sales, he joined one of the first specialty pharmacies created to serve the needs of chronically ill specialty patients—in the late 80’s when the bleeding disorders community was living through the horrors of blood products contaminated with HIV/HCV. During this time, he was a contributing author and key source of clinical laboratory information for J.B. Lippincott’s 6th Edition of Introductory Medical-Surgical Nursing with his friend and author Jeanne C. Scherer. He also authored a training manual on the Diagnosis of Consumptive Coagulopathies for Murex Diagnostics. |
