• Managed care-affiliated care team members involved with patient evaluation, education, and follow-up for hemophilia patients including: physicians, pharmacists, registered nurses, and case managers

STATEMENT OF NEED/PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Hemophilia is an expensive chronic condition with total annual costs that can average $250,000 or more for severe patients. Optimal outcomes requires a collaborative and coordinated patient experience. The collaborative team can include an insurer, Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC), and specialty pharmacy. Specialty pharmacy services can support patient adherence to treatment and assist physicians, plans and employers in meeting clinical and/or financial goals. This symposium, joint sponsored by the National Hemophilia Foundation, will emphasize the need for well-coordinated treatment management, the importance of understanding effective ways of using available treatments, and the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders.

TRACK 1 EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

• Review the pathophysiology of general hemophilia and hemophilia with inhibitors, including the impact on clinical and economic outcomes, and patients’ quality of life
• Assess the available hemophilia therapies for both children and adults, with and without inhibitors
• Employ treatment management strategies to improve outcomes for patients with hemophilia
• Provide appropriate care and counsel for patients and their families.
• Provide accurate and appropriate counsel as part of the treatment team

TRACK 2 EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

• Implement the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council (MASAC) Quality of Care Guidelines for the treatment of hemophilia
• Discuss the cost and appropriate use of prophylactic versus episodic factor replacement
• Evaluate current and evolving hemophilia medical and pharmacy management strategies, including specialty pharmacy management services
• Provide appropriate care and counsel for patients and their families.
• Provide accurate and appropriate counsel as part of the treatment team

Educational Objective (Track 3)
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

• Explain the benefits of collaborating with HTCs to improve outcomes for patients with hemophilia
• Employ collaborative care strategies and resources for the comprehensive care team, including HTCs, to improve care coordination for patients with hemophilia
• Provide appropriate care and counsel for patients and their families.
• Provide accurate and appropriate counsel as part of the treatment team
